Red Bull Crashed Ice US Championships 2013

On Saturday January 26, 2013 the finals for the Red Bull Crashed Ice US Championships were held in St. Paul Minnesota. I had a media pass which actually didn't help much in navigating the crowd of 115,000 but it did provide relief once I managed to get to a media only spot. I made almost 4000 images and posted a few to a collection on Flickr.

Here is a great slideshow of my favorite crashes.

Red Bull Crashed Ice US Championships

I spent the afternoon as official media at the Red Bull Crashed Ice US Championships in St. Paul Minnesota. Had a great time. This was the US qualifying round so 100 crazy skaters did the course one by one. The top 32 times move on to the next round. On Friday, 100 international competitors will do the same. The finals are on Saturday.  It was about 4F with a biting wind.  Not sure the wind chill but it was pretty cold.

US Pond Hockey Championships

I got up early today and made it out to Lake Nokomis in Minneapolis for the US Pond Hockey Championships. My thermometer showed 1F and I estimate the wind was probably 10-15 mphs.

It was cold but since I have the proper gear, only my fingertips and nose got uncomfortably cold.

The D4 performed flawlessly along with a rented Nikkor 70-200f2.8. Fun lens but very heavy. If this sports photography gets to be a habit, I'll have to buy one but until then I don't need it. My 70-300G VR works just find for the wildlife photography I do.

Spent the day on Lake Minnetonka celebrating Arctic Fever

I had fun on Lake Minnetonka in Excelsior today. Excelsior Brewing Co sponsored a fat tire bike race and lots of people came out to play.

The bike race became wicked pretty fast. It was moderately windy all day but shortly after the race started the wind really picked up. Since this race was a fat tire race, the participants weren't supposed to have studded tires. Well...the lake didn't have much snow as you can see in the photo on the right. Once the wind really took off, it knocked over the riders like bowling pins.

The ice sail boat people sure had fun though.
